As the first semester comes to an end, take time to reflect on your learning and growth in this course. In a well-developed response, explain what you enjoyed most about the class, identify the project or assignment you found most engaging, and discuss which aspect of the course you connected with the most (such as poetry, fiction, writing, or discussion). Finally, reflect on one area where you feel you need additional support or improvement as we move into the spring semester.

Prompt Response:  I think that I connected the most with poetry. Poetry was very engaging and I found dissecting the meanings out of them to be really interesting. My favorite project that I did in this class was my origin myth project. I put a lot of effort into making an interesting story for that project and I was proud of the outcome. I would say I need the most improvement in my writing skills. Although I think they are fine, I think there are lots of ways I can improve on them. Summary: Today we worked on our projects in class. Reflection:  I had a lot of fun in the first semester of this course.

Many holidays center around traditions. Describe one tradition that is important to you or your family and explain why it still matters (or why it no longer does).

Prompt: A tradition that is important to me and my family is celebrating Christmas. We celebrate every year and it usually takes up a few days. We visit both sides of the family before Christmas, and then randomly decide for Christmas day which side we visit. Christmas is always a great time and it is one of my most cherished times. Summary: Today we worked on our projects Reflection: I need to finish my project tonight.

How have the holidays changed as you have grown older? Compare your experiences of the holidays during childhood with how you experience them now, focusing on shifts in perspective, responsibilities, or emotional meaning.

Prompt: As I have grown older, holidays have started to feel less magical. I feel like they are a lot less meaningful as they used to be. Christmas used to be my favorite day of every year, but now it seems similar to regular days. I think that childhood innocence makes the holidays feel so much more real. Summary: Today were worked on lesson 6 vocabulary. Reflection: I learned some new words today.

Write about something you’ve outgrown but still miss

Prompt: Something that I have outgrown but miss is trick or treating. Trick or treating pre-covid was some of the most fun I have ever had. Now that I am older, it is looked down upon if I were to continue walking around asking for candy. Sometimes I wish this weren't the case because Halloween has felt very bland recently. Summary: Today we read "Refugee in America" Reflection: It is important to understand your civil rights and liberties.

Write about something that you can't stop thinking about.

Prompt: I can't stop thinking about what I will do after high school. It is an extremely important decision but I feel so lost. I feel like I want to go to college, but going to trade school might be more financially safe. Whatever I pick will impact the rest of my life. Summary: Today we chose our classes for Senior year. Reflection: I need to start my final project soon.

Cultural Mask

Write about the best gift you have received.

Prompt Response:  The best gift I have received was my computer. I use my computer just about everyday. It is a lot more efficient for doing homework than my school Chromebook. I also sometimes use my computer to play games. Summary: Today we did vocabulary and looked at our final. Reflection:  I should start my final soon.

In “I, Too,” the speaker expresses pride in his identity and his rightful place in America. Reflect on your own life: What aspect of your cultural identity are you most proud of, and why?

Prompt Response:  I am most proud to be American. It is arguably the greatest country in the world right now. I am also very proud of the culture and history of this nation. History is very important to me because it is a passion of mine. Summary: Today we read "I, too" and started our cultural masks. Reflection:  I think it is important to be proud of your culture.

In “We Real Cool,” the speakers make choices that seem exciting, bold, and rebellious, even though those choices lead to consequences. Write about a moment in your own life when you followed what looked cool or fun, only to realize afterwards that it wasn’t the smart or responsible path. What influenced your decision, and how did your perspective change later?

Prompt Response:  There have been many instances where I procrastinate on my homework because there are other things that I would rather do. A lot of times where I have done this I have ended up staying up very late in order to complete the homework. This is almost never worth it and it is a habit that I have been trying to change. I think I will really benefit from this change. Summary: Today we read "We Real Cool". Reflection:  Doing things to seem cool that only harm you are not smart in the long run.

Discuss something meaningful or memorable you experienced over the break, or reflect on what you felt most thankful for during that time.

Prompt Response:  Over break me and my friends started playing basketball. Growing up I had only even touched a basketball a handful of times. This also describes a lot of my friends, so everybody was on even ground. It was a fun way to spend my time by learning a new skill rather than staying at home everyday. Summary: Today we worked on vocabulary. Reflection:  I learned new vocabulary words.

After watching the short film Identity, write a blog post reflecting on how the masks in the film represent the pressure to fit in and the struggle to discover who you really are. Choose one moment from the film that stood out to you and explain why. Then, connect the film’s message to Langston Hughes’ poem “I, Too” and to the mask you are creating in class. What part of your identity do you want your mask to reveal?

Prompt Response:  The masks in the short film are tools used to fit in and seem more desirable. A seen that stuck out to me was when it zoomed in on a poster that said "This is what it looks like to be beautiful", which a girl wearing a yellow mask in the center. A group of girls wearing yellow masks surround the poster. This scene stuck out because it shows how a lot of people care more about what others think rather than what they actually like. This film relates to "I, Too" by Langston Hughes and the cultural mask assignment because they share the same theme of identity. I want my mask to reveal the way I view myself. Summary: Today we worked on our masks Reflection:  I think that this film carries an important message.
